SWMP in Scotland

What is a SWMP?

Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) are an important tool for improving environmental performance and reducing the rising costs of construction waste disposal. Minimising and managing waste more efficiently is becoming increasingly important on site. In Scotland during 2005/2006 construction and demolition waste totalled approximately 10.6 million tonnes*. As a result pressures now include a rising landfill tax, limited landfill space, hazardous waste regulations, duty of care, greener procurement, environmental management systems and higher client expectations.

SWMPs are waste minimisation and management frameworks to help construction companies to:

  • Reduce waste destined for landfill.
  • Meet legislative requirements.
  • Meet client expectations.
  • Reduce raw material costs.
  • Reduce waste disposal costs.
